Operational Brief · Safety & Standards
Risk is the environment. Discipline is the response.
Expedition environments carry real consequence. We don't pretend otherwise — and we don't market around it. This page documents how Untamed Tribe manages risk: the certifications our lead guides hold, the SOPs we operate under, the comms we carry, and the decisions we're willing to make to bring everyone home.
We don't eliminate risk. We earn the right to operate in it.
Adventure tourism markets the experience and downplays the consequences. Survival schools sell suffering and call it safety. Neither is honest. Real expeditions — mountain, ocean, river, cave — have weather, fatigue, terrain, and human-factor risks that don't disappear because a brochure says they do.
Our job is not to remove risk. Our job is to identify it, plan for it, brief it, monitor it in real time, and make conservative decisions when the data turns. That requires WFR-certified leadership, documented procedures, redundant comms, and a culture where turning around is a sign of judgment — not failure.
Capability over comfort. Standards over scale. Earned, not flashy.
02 // Guide Standards
Who's actually running your expedition.
Certifications are the floor, not the ceiling. Every lead guide also goes through internal Untamed Tribe SOP review, scenario-based assessment, and a documented progression pathway before they run point on a cohort.
WFR minimum. WEMT preferred.
Every lead guide carries a current Wilderness First Responder certification at minimum. On remote and international expeditions, we move toward Wilderness EMT — sourced through NOLS Wilderness Medicine or SOLO.
AMGA-trained leadership.
Climbing and alpine days are led by guides with American Mountain Guides Association training appropriate to the terrain — SPI at minimum for technical rock days, with higher AMGA progressions for the Cordillera Blanca and other alpine objectives.
NAUI / TDI / ACA Level 4.
North Florida springs, Belize reef, and river operations run under PADI/TDI Divemaster credentials for dive ops and ACA L4 minimum for paddlesports. Cave-specific certs required where the environment demands them.
SOP review & scenario assessment.
Beyond external certifications, every guide is vetted against Untamed Tribe's documented operating standards, briefed on the cohort-specific risk profile, and assessed in scenario-based decision-making before leading a participant team.
Operations & Safety Lead
Adam — Operations & Safety
Safety governance, expedition authorization, and risk management standards sit with Adam. He owns the SOPs, the EAPs, guide compliance reviews, and the go/no-go authority that escalates above any single trip leader. If an expedition runs, it's because Operations has signed off on the risk plan in writing.
What we carry. What we document. What we rehearse.
Safety doesn't live in a marketing page — it lives in the equipment list, the brief, the checklist, and the comms log. These are the systems that travel with every Untamed Tribe team.
Garmin inReach — every team.
Satellite two-way messaging and SOS on every expedition, regardless of domestic or international. Trip leaders carry sat phone redundancy on international and remote-wilderness operations.
Documented SOPs & EAPs.
Standard Operating Procedures and Emergency Action Plans are written, version-controlled, and reviewed quarterly. Every guide briefs the cohort-specific EAP at expedition start — evacuation routes, comms tree, and decision authority.
Medical kits scaled to risk.
Kits are built to the specific environment, duration, and evacuation profile of each expedition — not a one-size-fits-all bag. Altitude-specific medications and protocols for the Cordillera Blanca; dive-injury readiness for spring and reef ops.
Pre-expedition screening.
Application-based enrollment with documented fitness, medical, and experience screening. Required readiness benchmarks 4 weeks out. Cohorts that don't meet baseline don't deploy — that's a feature, not a friction point.
Insurance & evacuation coverage.
Commercial general liability and professional liability through outdoor-industry brokers. Participants are required to carry expedition-grade travel insurance with evacuation coverage (Global Rescue, Redpoint, or equivalent) on international objectives.
After-Action Review — every expedition.
Structured guide AAR within 72 hours of extraction. Near-misses logged, SOPs updated, lessons rolled into the next cohort's brief. The same discipline that runs military debriefs runs ours.
04 // Go / No-Go Logic
Turning around is a sign of judgment.
The hardest call on any expedition is the one to change the plan. We make those calls early, often, and without apology — because the objective is capable people coming home, not photos for the website.
| Decision point | Trigger | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Weather hold or rerouting | Forecast outside operating envelope; lightning, whiteout, or storm cell within decision window | Lead Guide |
| Cohort-level pace or capability | Team performance below readiness baseline at acclimatization or skills checkpoint | Lead Guide |
| Individual medical / AMS | Symptoms meeting documented descent or evac criteria; injury exceeding field-treatment scope | Lead Guide + WFR |
| Objective abort | Compound risk factors — weather + fatigue + terrain — exceeding planned tolerance | Lead Guide + Ops |
| Full expedition cancellation | Geopolitical instability, regional medical/SAR capacity loss, permit revocation, or insurance condition | Ops + Founder |
| Participant removal | Code-of-conduct violation, repeated safety non-compliance, or team-risk behavior | Lead Guide + Ops |
Every decision above is documented in real time via the trip log and reviewed in the post-expedition AAR. Authority can always escalate up the chain — it never escalates down. If a guide calls it, the expedition honors the call.
05 // Your Responsibility
Safety is shared. Here's your half of the contract.
Our systems only work when participants meet the standard. Untamed Tribe is application-based for exactly this reason — we're not optimizing for headcount, we're optimizing for cohorts who can actually operate in the environment they signed up for.

01 — Honesty
Tell us the truth on the application. Medical history, fitness baseline, prior experience. Hiding a knee, a cardiac flag, or a fitness gap doesn't help anyone — it just moves the failure point into the field.
